I'll be honest, I visited back in March and I unfortunately can't remember what I ordered. Whatever it was, it was seriously delicious. However, what I didn't forget was the kindness and friendliness of the staff in the store. It was just a day or so after their first day being open for the season, and the line was well out the door as it was an extremely warm day. Despite this, when it was finally my turn to place my order, the staff member very quickly scooped and weighed my ice cream, and didn't seem at all bothered by other guests who wanted to sample just about everything. Only con, they only accept cash. Not a huge issue, but I normally don't have any on me unless I am traveling, like I was when I visited earlier this year.

My all time favorite place to spend money and purchase the purest happiness. The friendly staff is quick to make rapport and guide you into the most delicious ice cream of your life. Clean, cool and hip this spot is a consistent winner whether you're getting a scoop of chocolate flake fromage (my personal recommendation) or a perfect homemade cookie or a cookie ice cream sandwich! Don't miss.

I will start off with the positive and let you know that this place has absolutely perfect cookies! I tried the English Toffee and I was blown away!! Unfortunately, that amazing cookie was overshadowed by an absolutely terrible experience. I went with my husband and another couple. We all ordered. I sampled a couple flavors since it was my first time. I decided to go with a milkshake. And since I had never seen anything as incredible as melted Snickers, I paid extra to have some drizzled on top. Let me tell you, that melted Snickers was one of the best things I've ever tasted and absolutely every ice cream store should offer it as a topping. However, the milkshake itself was very disappointing. It tasted as if the ice cream to milk ratio was way off, because it tasted more like just plain milk than it did sweet and flavorful ice cream. The complete lack of flavor was disappointing enough that I felt it was worth returning/exchanging. Now, I've never sent back food simply based on not being satisfied, so I definitely felt bad. But I went back in and waited in line again. When I finally got near the front and sheepishly explained my situation to the girl at the counter, she immediately waved me over to the side to speak with her. She gave me the sense that my complaint could upset or concern the customers around me. She asked if I remembered who made my milkshake - I did, and I pointed her out. So she came over to talk to me. Again, I explained that I was embarrassed to say it, but I was really unhappy with the milkshake and I wondered if I might be able to exchange it for something else - I would've been happy to exchange it for something of lesser value. The girl looked concerned and confused. She asked if the topping I requested ruined it by making the ice cream too melty. I insisted that I actually loved the topping - in fact, I'd love to have more of the topping! - but the milkshake was just flavorless. Another girl came by and asked if I'd tried the flavor before I requested it and I assured her I had. Again, it tasted too watered down. In the end, I was told that they couldn't really do anything about the milkshake, but they would be happy to make me something else if I wanted to purchase. I was so dumbfounded and caught off guard by this I didn't know what to say. Any other time I've been with someone at a restaurant who sent something back, the waiter would happily exchange it for something else. And sometimes even take a percentage off the bill for the inconvenience. But here I felt like I was the unreasonable one. I felt so uncomfortable that I simply left - leaving the milkshake with them - and let it go. Later, I called the store. I'd talked the situation over with my husband and friends and they seemed to agree with me. They'd all had a pleasant experience and were shocked that my situation was handled the way it was. Bare minimum, they assumed that I would be offered a refund. So when I called I asked to speak to the manager and I explained the situation. Again, just like the first time, I was as pleasant as possible - I really wasn't out to get them or get more than I'd paid for. And I don't Think came off as mean and I certainly didn't raise my voice. But this manager, in a calm and friendly tone, explained to me that that is indeed their policy. Unless they've made something wrong, they won't give refunds for simply being unhappy with the product. She explained that if they operated that way, they might have many people every day taking advantage of them in this way. I voiced that I would hope that wasn't a problem they would have every day - I would hope that their product was good enough to please most people most every day. This business philosophy seems like a terrible idea to me. Every once in awhile, you're going to get a crazy customer with a crazy request, but even then you do want to try and please them. And although I know I'm bias, I don't think I was being unreasonable. Anyway, that's my story. Decide for yourself. I actually really am torn - I'd love to say that I'll never spend my money there again, but those cookies were so good....but I know I'll ever buy ice cream there again. If I want out of this world, crazy amazing ice cream (and decent customer service), I'm going to Glace!!!

Wow! I had been here years before and forgotten that it was there. If you want to feel nostalgic and eat some very good sweets than you must go to Murray's. All I can say is mmmm mmmm good! They aren't open every day nor all year long so check that they are open before heading over.

Murray's is a classic, old-school ice cream shop. They make their waffle cones in the store (definitely opt for one of those and not a dish), and offer sundaes, a wide range of toppings, cookies, and more. Their flavors are mostly classic - you won't find anything too out of the box here except for the chocolate flake frommage (worth trying). There are other places in town that do unique flavors much better. I usually go for a basic vanilla or coffee ice cream and have yet to be disappointed. Murray's is inexpensive and fits the bill if you're in Westport craving a treat on a hot summer day. The line varies depending on day and time, but never seems to be too long. There's seating inside, but I recommend taking your cone outside to enjoy the weather on one of the benches or to take a stroll around the neighborhood.

First visit and both hubs and I went with a coffee/chocolate pieces flavor that was delish! Nice bright and clean atmosphere. Parking is hard to find other than the few designated spots - we were lucky enough to get one. Will go back!

This place is really cute and the ice cream tastes good. My only problem with it was that the flavors were very limited- not one single fruit option! Not sure I have ever been to an ice cream shop/parlor that didn't at least have strawberry! That said, their soda fountain creations are to die for!! I had a cherry soda and it was expertly prepared and tasted soooo good. Also, the whipped cream seemed real. My mom has ways made fresh whipped cream so I know the difference. It was pretty packed on a hot Saturday and the service is friendly but super slow. Be prepared to wait! Next time, I might try the cherry limeade.

This is our go to place for dessert, celebrations, and just plain fun! Take cash because they don't take plastic. My peanut/tree nut allergic son was so happy to be able to safely have Chocolate Flake Fromage. If you haven't been here, and you only eat ice cream at national chains, stop by and support local. Parking in back is easier and walking up the stairs makes me feel a bit better about indulging.

Cookies and ice cream were great on their own, but together, i felt that it was too sweet. And cookies were too thick to make an ice cream sandwich. When you bite it, it squeezed out the ice cream. But anyhow, both tasted awesome!

  • Matthew N.

I'm usually a bigger frozen custard fan than ice cream but this place blew me away! I tried an ice cream sandwich with a chocolate chip cookie, english toffee cookie and skor-umptious (something like that) ice cream. I could stay here all day trying different combinations! The cookies were awesome and tasted homemade, the ice cream was extra creamy....delicious!

Murray's is too cute to handle, but make note that they DO NOT accept credit cards. I missed the sign and ended up scrounging through my wallet and my boyfriend's cup holders to afford our cones. Thankfully, the staff was very kind to us despite my error. I got a cone of their snicker doodle cookie ice cream and immediately entered taste bud Nirvana. I could drain an entire ATM for Murray's. I will definitely be back next summer.

WOWZER!!!! We were in KC visiting when we got a hankering for some ice cream. So as usual, I searched Yelp looking for the best place to go. This place was within walking distance of our hotel, so we trotted over there. And we were not disappointed!!! The store was busy, but we got help right away and they even offered samples if we were undecided. I got two scoops, Oreo and Choc Chip and both were out of this world! I got fudge topping on one and caramel on the other. I topped it off with pecans, whip cream and a cherry and I was in sweet heaven! My sig. other enjoyed his selection as well. We ate outside since the weather was perfect (or you can eat inside). This is a place in KC we will always come to when we have a sweet tooth!

OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG!OMG! That is all that really needs to be said... Seriously, check this place out! After lunch with Tim, we walked around a bit and he talked me into stopping by Murray's. I was so stuffed from lunch I really had no desire to stop, but as we got closer to the door, the yummy smells reached out and grab me by the ear dragging me inside! I went for a scoop of ice cream to take home for later. Tim grabbed some cookies. Tim gave me a bite of one of his cookies and it seriously was the absolute best cookie I have ever tasted. Keep in mind I wear a cookie monster hat!!! Thinking there was no way to live up to the cookie yum, I pulled my ice cream out later and it may have been the best scoop of ice cream I have ever had. Full of bits and pieces. High quality ingredients. Just plain super yummy. The only bad thing is that they close over the winter. I will be there to buy some goodies to stock up before they head out on vacation.

Murray's was a staple of my teenage years. Awkward dates. A welcome respite from the heat on summer days walking between record stores and incense shops before Westport lost most of its non-restaurant retail space. I'm carrying on the tradition with my little girl, and I'm glad and proud. The ice cream is always great, the shop is always spotless, and I never regret spending my money here. It's cash only and they keep odd daily and seasonal hours, but you can always find that info on Facebook or the web and avoid disappointment of walking up on them being closed. Stop in some time and keep this small, local business alive.

I feel really bad saying this.. but... meh. I think the bar was set too high for my first Murray's trip. I've been reading review after review full of delectable treats and childhood nostalgia. I was prepared to fall in love and quit my current job to fulfilled my never before realized passion of ice cream sales at Murray's. It didn't happen. To cover my bases, I ordered 1 scoop of Chocolate Flake Fromage, 1 scoop of butterscotch in a dish, but with a Butterfinger waffle cone on the side. I also got one frosted sugar cookie to take home for the husband. The Chocolate Flake Fromage was the first disappointment. This is not the frankincense and myrrh that you guys promised me. It is a fancy way of saying chocolate chip. And no, it isn't any more exciting than that. The butterscotch was good. This I would definitely get again. As for the waffle cone, meh. A little pricey, but a solid option. And the cookie wasn't the soft temptress that I thought she would be. It was hard. Now, before I sound too harsh, Murray's was good. They served ice cold tasty tastiness and I can't hate on that. I think the hype is just a bit much. I'd definitely come here again, but I wouldn't seek it out over any other place in the city.

Murray's is definitely your old fashioned, nostalgic, neighborhood ice creamery with super nice staff and creamy ice cream. We came in after lunch and I got to sample their famous Chocolate Flake Fromage, but it had too much of a tart taste for my liking (since it's a cream cheese based ice cream). I also tried the Mocha Chip, but the chocolate and coffee taste was too strong for me. Since we were having a difficult time deciding between two flavors, the server suggested that we get a half scoop of each flavor, which was perfect! We ended up with a Half Scoop Oreos n Cream & Half Scoop of Toffee Coffee Crunch ($4.28, including tax, yelp.com/biz_photos/murr… ). I loved the cookies and cream, which had good chunks of oreo. The toffee coffee crunch was also good (if you like coffee and toffee..), but it was my second favorite flavor. Parking was easy since they have a couple spots for Murray's customers only, and it wasn't that busy on the Sunday afternoon we went. However, the lot isn't that big, so parking might be difficult to find when the shop is busy. Overall, I'd highly recommend Murray's for any ice cream lover.

The ultimate let down. I had been craving an ice cream cookie sandwich, I searched Google and yelp and ran across Murray's. I've been living in KC for seven years and frequent westport but for some reason never heard of Murray's. I was excited because majority of the reviews were positive and a lot of people raved at how good the ice cream sandwich was. I went two weeks ago but the line was way too long so we didn't get anything, I decided to try again yesterday and there was no line. I went with 1 chocolate chip cookie, one toffee cookie with vanilla bean ice cream. I was extremely disappointed when I bit into the cookie only to find that they were very hard, to the point where they were inedible. We returned the ice cream sandwich and were told that they were a fresh batch from the oven, huh! I know fresh out of the oven cookies and those cookies were so hard. They refused to just let me get my money back and only offered an exchange for something else, I of course didn't want anything else. 6 dollars flushed down the drain and only had one bite! From a consumer perspective this is just not right and a bad business tactic. Oh and in case you're wondering, no I never received an apology, they just kept repeating that the cookies were fresh out the oven.

The very thought of Murray's incites joyous glee within my whole soul. I cannot say enough about this place and its delicious concoctions. I've been a loyal customer for the past 8 years and will remain one until my body is six feet under. I don't believe you can ever go wrong when you get something from Murray's. They have imaginative flavors that are interesting, yet, still very simplistic. I'm a big fan of the praline pecan, Smitty's French lemon, Fridgette Bordeaux and of course, the chocolate flake fromage. What's better than an ice cream cone? Answer, an ice cream cookie sandwich. Murray's cookies are simply THE BEST IN THE CITY. Period. End of story. My favorite is the English toffee, although their ginger cookie with cinnamon icing is a close second. It's always wise to come to Murray's as soon as you can, because the cookies tend to sell out quickly. There are a few things that people should know about Murray's before visiting. 1. It's cash or check only. I've written many-a-check in small amounts to this place. I don't care. It's worth it. 2. It's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. 3. It's seasonally opened from late March to late November/early December. I call the months between December to early March, my dark ages. 4. They weigh their ice cream and their cookies for pricing. I don't mind this method because, it's worked out for them for the past 20+ years. 5. Cookies are baked FRESH, that means they have cookies available about an hour after they open. 6. You can always buy a tub of ice cream or cookie dough to take home with you. Yes, Murray's may have minor nuances that may be annoying or "too inconvenient" for some people. But if you get past all of that and concentrate on Murray's products, you will realize that they just make good quality stuff. Stuff that's effing delicious and will make you weep with joy every single time you visit.

Murray's, you're closed 5 months out of the year, you only take cash, you close at 9:30pm, and you haven't redecorated since 1990. All of these things are terrible ideas and, yet, you are my favorite ice creamery, cookie bakery, and birthday cake shop in kc. Congratulations on making horrible business decisions and still killing it.

I am a true ice cream lover and this place hit the spot this day! With a combination of wide variety of flavors, options, and desserts to go with your ice cream it is hard to go wrong. This day I need a caffeine fix so I got the vanilla brittle ice cream with an expresso shot, great combo that kept me moving. Cute location in Westport, I would stop in for sure. After all, ice cream fills in the cracks and we all should support my beloved dairy farmers :)

Really? At midday in summer an ice cream place is closed? Murray's, you may want to rethink your hours... :(

  • Clarice W.

3.5 stars. I'm sympathetic to the competitive market that ice cream shops are in: on one hand, the ice cream base has to be creamy and smooth; on the other hand, there's a growing appeal for novel, crazy flavors that don't necessarily lend themselves well to that rich creamy texture. Murray's accomplishes both of these to some degree, but doesn't quite shine in either category. Murray's has a small assortment (8-10) of classic and new flavors. I had the honey cornbread ice cream which was really tasty because I adore cornbread - but the texture was not as rich as I'd hoped (try Sylas and Maddys in Lawrence if you want creamy), and I've seen more innovative flavors elsewhere (Glace). Prices are also quite steep (around $3.50 for 1 very small scoop) and at that price I expect ice cream that fully delivers either in flavor or texture, and Murray's just fell short of both. It's a cute diner-esque shop, though, that would be perfect for a date. That plus my insatiable love for corn bread means I'm rounding up to 4 stars!

We've been trying to get to this place for months, but every time we go by for an after dinner treat they are closed. We finally timed it right (actually they were turning the sign on the door to "closed" when we arrived, but my pouty face did the trick)! I really think that they need to rethink their hours, at least in the summer. They are only open until 9:30 (thurs-sun noon-9:30). We watched plenty of disappointed potential customers walk away as we enjoyed our ice cream outside the storefront; I felt bad for them...kind of (hey, I was that person many a times)! Now for the important stuff; the ice cream is exceptional! Lots of good, different from the norm, flavors. We both enjoyed the wine soaked cherry chocolate chip (or something like that) which was divine! Wine, chocolate and cherries - it doesn't get better than that. My other scoop was a jamocha almond fudge type flavor, another great choice. Best of all you can get a split (2 flavors) junior scoop, which is the perfect amount of ice cream - nothing small about it. Five star ice cream that only got four stars because it is so hard to get, due to the hours of operation!

This is the best ice cream you can get period! The quality and taste is better than anywhere else I have ever eaten. The smooth consistency of the ice cream melting with their own personal flavors is unmatched. Every flavor is so powerful and you can taste every ingredient. They do it right! Remember to bring cash and you will be a little sad I you come in the winter because it is closed.

With the lack of Dairy Queen's in the inner city area, the fun, of summertime goodness with a big fat dripping ice cream cone on a hot summer night, became almost extinct in my life...until I met Murray!!!! Let me just tell you if you love ice cream, then you NEED to check out Murray's Ice Creams and Cookies!! A small business tucked away in a corner on Westport is a little known gem in KCMO. I went here with my sister after we had spent an afternoon at the local Tea Drops. We decided we wanted to check out a restaurant, seeing as an ice cold bubble tea, wasn't enough for our grumbling stomachs. Any whooos, we decided to Google close by restaurants, as we are big foodies and are always trying to find some place new in KC to munch. As I scrolled through the long list of nearby places, only one caught my eye... Murray's Ice Creams and Cookies!!!! Thank you Lord Jesus :)!!! We quickly left Tea Drops in a dash, as Murray's is only a few feet away, we walked in the little shop and was greeted by a very nice young woman, who was very patient with us as we salivated over all the options. This isn't just Plain Jane ice cream, you have a large choice of varying flavors. I jumped at the choice of anything chocolate of course, and got their triple fudge and took a walk on the wild side with a scoop of their apple pie cheesecake ice cream. There is a choice of the traditional waffle cone or you can go with the waffle cone bowl, or go with no cone at all. There are also many options of delicious extra toppings. This ice cream was good ya'll!! And when I say good, I mean DELICIOUS! This isn't your run of the mill store bought, dry, lackadaisical kind of ice cream, no no my friends, this is the REAL DEAL stuff, so creamy and fresh. If you're on a diet, stay away, because this is REAL DEAL ice cream, not that runny watery frozen yogurt stuff. We're talking real CREAM!!! The apple pie cheesecake flavor was actually FULL of chunks of apple pie cheesecake! And the triple fudge was FULL of large chunks of chocolate, not little baby minuscule pieces that go completely unnoticed and you end of feeling like you just ate chocolate milk. No, no my friends, we're talking about quality ice cream. My sis, got two scoops of their lemon ice cream. DIVINE!! It was like eating fresh home made lemons bars, so creamy and delicious. Anyways, by now you can tell that I'm crazy about the place and if you are in KC it is a much needed place to try out. The decor is fun, yet simple and take some time to slow down, stop and take a seat outside the shop and enjoy your ice cream. My sis and I did, and we got a lot of people stopping by, telling us how jealous they were, that we were enjoying ice cream in this hot weather. You can check out their Facebook page and see what flavors they have available for the day as well. All in all, Murray's is a wonderful place to visit with friends and family. Bring your kids, because what kid doesn't love ice cream?

This is probably the best homemade ice cream place that I have ever been to, and I really miss it now that we have moved from Kansas City. However, I try to make a stop every time I go back to Kansas City (as long as it's not the off season)! My favorite flavor is probably French Apple Tart, but unfortunately, it is not available every time. I've never had a flavor I didn't like, and they let you sample whatever flavors you like before you commit, so you can't go wrong. Like other reviewers have said, make sure to go to an ATM beforehand, as they only take cash, and have patience when looking for a parking spot.

I don't even know where to begin with this place. When we parked and got out of the car, we could smell the waffle cones being made. That smell was absolute heaven!!!! When you enter the colorful store, you can't help but feel like a little kid! Once you see the flavors of ice cream (and even try a sample or two), you feel even more kid like! The menu is a little bit much to take in, but because it is well organized, it is very easy to read the options. I wish I could say that ordering was easy, but because I couldn't decide what I wanted (mainly because EVERYTHING sounded so awesome), it took me forever. I finally decided on the fluffer nutter with the peanut butter banana buster ice cream. It was wonderful! I will say it needed just a hint more marshmallow for my personal taste, but scrumptious nonetheless! The other person with me got the brownie sundae with the chocolate and caffeine ice cream. WAY too much chocolate for me personally, but he loved it! I did try a bite and the brownie was very moist and delicious. The chocolate and caffeine ice cream was awesome too! Now, as for the staff... EPIC!!!! They were awesome! Very friendly, very helpful, very patient while I was trying to figure out what I wanted...lol! I had to take our daughter to the bathroom (and I had to go as well), they were awesome enough to find the key (because a little girl from a different shop in the center had borrowed it earlier). When I got back and have them the key, they handed me my ice cream (they had placed it in the freezer so it wouldn't melt!) Now that is customer service! I would recommend this place to anyone who will be in KC!!!!

This place should be in every KC guide book. It blows all other ice cream shops out of the water. The homemade flavors rotate, and never dissapoint. If you're going for a sundae, the toppings bar is out of this world. Pro tip: They will make an ice cream sandwich out of any flavor of ice cream, and any two fresh baked cookies in the case. Pure heaven! Remember to bring cash or check for your visit, as credit/debit is not accepted.

We love Murray's! It is a special treat when we come to town. I love how there are different kinds of home made ice cream each time we go there. I never know what will be available but I'm not ever disappointed. My favorites include Cappuccino Crunch and One Drunk Monk. You can't go wrong with the Chocolate Flake Fromage which is always available. They are more than happy to let you sample the flavors so you know you'll be getting something you like. Get your ice cream served to you in a chocolate lined waffle bowl for an extra treat. Their cookies are pretty darn good too.

These, my friends, are the world's best ice cream and cookies. Amazing, life-changing even. The ice cream flavors change frequently, so I can't make a recommendation as to what flavor, but I will say, you can't go wrong! And those cookies...just wonderful. Oatmeal chocolate chip and butterscotch cookies are my two favorites. Plus the English toffee. Great cherry phosphates too (how many places have that?). One star missing for sometimes aloof service.

This review is only for the root beer float. I was at the Westport Food Truck Festival and I was thirsty after eating everything I ate. My friends wanted to go to Murray's which was nearby. I wasn't in the mood for ice cream even though that's what this place was known for (that and their milkshakes). The inside of this place smelled like batter which was good to me. The staff here were nice and seemed to know what they were doing. I ordered a small root beer float ($3.81 total). It was good and exactly what I needed to quench my thirst. The scoop of vanilla ice cream that was in the cup might have been a small scoop (at least it seemed that way). It made sense that it was a small scoop since the root beer would "float" up too much. I thought it was fine though with such a small scoop. I'll have to come back here to try their ice cream and update my review then.

One of my favorite places in Kansas City. I grew up going here and it always brings me joy to visit again whenever I'm in town. Over the years, their offerings -- from cookies to ice cream -- have been consistently delicious. I'll never forget that once when I was a kid my father took me in for an ice cream cone and I ordered a flavor called "Easter Basket." Just as its name implies, it was chock full of every delicious treat you could imagine; I remember it having chocolate Robins eggs, even pretzels. I still dream about that flavor. The cookies are great, too. I usually end up getting a cookie and cone with the excuse of it being "for old times' sake." Just a word of warning: the inside space is small, so I'd suggest walking around Westport instead. Also, it's cash only. Don't get caught with just a card or you'll be missing out on some tasty treats!

I've been a fan of Murray's for 24 years and counting. Quite simply, in all my travels I have found nothing that comes close to Murray's. And as my other reviews make it clear, Chocolate Flake Fromage is my obsession. It is my ultimate comfort food. There is nothing else on Earth for me that is better than Chocolate Flake Fromage. The obsession is so intense that my family buys quarts, packs it in dry ice and sends it to Las Vegas. Chocolate Flake Fromage is the ultimate relief from 110 degree heat! Stars? Yelp can't give me enough stars to rate this place. 5 x 5 Stars would be appropriate. So why do I keep updating my review with pretty much the same thing? I told everyone I was obsessed!

Best Ice Cream in town hands down. Try the chocolate flake fromage.

I had such high expectations for Murray's based on the Yelp reviews. I ordered the Chocolate Flake Fromage because everyone was raving about it. I was... kind of disappointed. I love ice cream but this was no different than something I could get at any average ice cream shop. I think Glace is far more unique and flavorful.

As my last night in Kansas City rolled around, I was writhing in the grip of mixed emotions. I had wanted to get out and explore on my final night in the city, perhaps grab a drink or eat dinner in a swanky restaurant. These plans were derailed by a raging head cold and the subsequent exhaustion of sniffling and sneezing my way through a day at the office. Guilt at staying in and the desire to curl up on the bed battled until I settled on a compromise: I would go to Murray's, only a short walk from my hotel, and get ice cream. (First I went to the ATM, since I heeded the bountiful cash-only warnings on Yelp.) Murray's is a pleasant little shop with lots of interesting flavors--both of ice cream and of staff. A woman who assured me that calories don't count when traveling scooped my ice cream for me, and a guy who was perhaps the most genuinely happy food service worker I have ever encountered rang up my purchase. I ended up going with the molasses and gingersnap flavor, and even through my congestion, I could tell it was delicious. I went into Murray's feeling cranky and ill, and left with a big ol' smile on my face. Who could ask for more? Ice cream really does solve everything.

I have to hit Murray's every single time I visit Kansas City. The ice cream is super creamy and light. I love homemade ice cream and it is so hard to find in today's Coldstone world. I love the cookies n cream. FYI they are closed Monday and Tuesday.

Murray's colorful, bright, and cheerful atmosphere was the perfect escape amidst a downpour of cold rain during a Westport visit. My root beer ice cream was rich and my mango ice sorbet was refreshing. Mixing the two flavors was even better. I tried my friend's coffee ice cream and it tasted like real, strong coffee!! If it wasn't already 8 PM with work looming the next morning, I would have tried one of their many coffee drinks. Murray's is adorable...bound to steal your heart.

The ice cream here is magical. There is no other explanation of why this ice cream is so good, it must be filled with love and fairy dust. Murray's opened for the season yesterday and I got my self a pint of Chocolate Zone to go. It of course was amazing! I go to this place as often as I can.

A Kansas City staple for a delectable treat. Little pricey for the product (and cash only - hit the ATM before you go), but Murray's is the best local ice cream around. Westport is a great spot for Murray's but is often difficult to find a spot to park later in the evening on the weekends with everyone patronizing the area's bars.

The other day, I was with Sara D. and when she learned I hadn't been to Murray's, we ended up there, for dessert, I suppose, after the meatballs at the Westport Food Truck Festival. There's no excuse for me not visiting Murray's, I go to Westport nearly everyday to yoga and pilates...what's up, Rhonda? Murrays is a cute little ice cream/coffee shop located in a near boring strip mall that includes a costume jewelry store with an odd clerk, and Californos, and a hat shop. Murray's is open from the first Sunday in March to December. Ice cream is my weakness. I love it. I'm not supposed to have it, I'm allergic to it. I saw the cute little bench, "peace love and Ice cream." that I've seen before, why haven't I stopped in there before? There's a sign, and the doorway. Inside are 2 large counters of different flavors of ice cream, and cookies. The ice cream flavors change daily, and they make it every morning. I sampled honey/cinnamon (I love cinnamon ice cream, one of those odd flavors that stays in my mind). I sampled coconut, and I'm not sure if I sampled the peach or not. Sara D had a peach cone, and I had the coconut ice cream cone. Oh, there's other flavors too. Honey/cinnamon, chocolate sorbet, French vanilla, espresso, and tons more. With it changing daily, it's worth checking out again and again. The ice cream tasted like the ice cream we make here at home. Real shredded coconut in each bite. (is it a bite?) The staff were great. They were very eager to serve up samples, with little spoons of whatever type we wanted. I saw another customer who ordered a sundae-2 dips, and topping. The holy grail of ice cream sundaes. There is also a coffee serving area where they make espresso and other types of coffees, and smoothies, and even have smoothies by the pint. The price is reasonable, if you don't mind...(See Glace)...I didn't think it was expensive at all. I'd rather eat ice cream than a cupcake and some cupcake shops are the same price. Therefore, I will be back. I guess I just defeated the purpose of going to nightly hot yoga classes in Westport?

I miss summer trips to Murray's! I moved away from the area. The air inside Murray's smells like you are walking into a giant cookie. The ice cream and sweets are amazing. Worth a visit for sure!

My niece posted Murray's would be opening today on Facebook. After a wonderful lunch dropped by here for dessert, I had a Carmel praline cone and Bob had a chocolate malt. Both were good. We will return.

I'm going to try to write this from the perspective of someone who's never been here. That'll be tough, there are only two excuses really for having never been to Murray's. a) you're 16, just got your driver's license and your Mom never took you out of the suburbs. b) you're visiting from out of town. Which ever the case, go. Go right now. Murray's is the darling of Murray Nixon who opened the place in 1984. Murray's is closed through the winter (around the first of December to around the middle of March), but while open is a hot bed of cold treats. Murray's is not the kind of place you'd see a Sysco truck roll up to. Murray and her people carefully craft their items just for you. So please get in your first car or your rental and go. godspeed. Oh, and on your first time, you should have one drunk monk if it's available. seriously.

Literally, as good as it gets! What a great place! Such incredible flavors and they are so creative. Their menu is enormous, but the amount of items they have is small. For example, they have an average amount of flavors, but give you all these different ways that you can have it, like a Sunday, Saturday, ice cream sandwich, shake, smoothie, etc. I really enjoy this place and the fact that everything seems to be made in the shop and with unique recipes.

Murray's has been in Westport for years, my first trip, 16 years ago, I greedily devoured a Chocolate Flake Fromage ice cream cone, and each time I go, I still want that same flavor. It was great then, and it is still fabulous. Ice cream is timeless. You slathered it all over your cute, pudgy, cherubic cheeks when you were little. Not much has changed. Except, you may use a napkin now to wipe the cream off your pudgy mug, or maybe not! I say, do. One thing that you definitely want to do is...Do bring cash. They don't take credit or debit cards. I would hate to see your lack of fundage come between you and you unrequited youth. Come to Murray's and transport yourself back to a simpler, yet messier time.

I am spoiled because I'm originally from Columbus, OH where Jeni Britton Bauer pioneered the recent wave of artisan ice creams. Murray's doesn't quite live up to Jeni's, but it comes pretty darn close. There is a great selection of ice creams and other dessert options (cookies, floats, shakes, etc.) The chocolate chip fromage is simple but to die for. The staff at Murray's are friendly and helpful. When dealing with customers who aren't used to the unusual flavors that Murray's offers, they offer kind guidance. There's often a line but it always moves quickly. Just make sure you're carrying cash, as credit and debit cards are not accepted. Murray's may not be able to compete with similar ice cream shops on a national level, but when it comes to Kansas City ice cream, it's the creme de la creme!

  • Max H.

There is no better ice cream in Kansas City. Actually, there might not be better ice cream anywhere in the world. I love the always changing flavors at Murray's. I rarely have the same flavor twice. Cookies are great as well. But the best is the chocolate malt (made with vanilla ice cream!). The chocolate shake is equally good if you aren't into malts. The price might seem high at $5 but it is worth every penny and every calorie. I just wish Murray's was open year round! Murray's is also pet friendly so bring your dog and get him a Frosty Paw treat.

Where the cookie monster and the ice cream monster meet! This place is awesome! I wish I lived nearby. The place is designed in retro 50s decor. The cookies are delicious, but what wins the prize, is the ice cream. It is hard to find home-made/restaurant-made ice cream nowadays. They have tons of toppings everything from nutella to the classic caramel. My favorite ice cream here is the triple berry.

As part of my initiation to KC, my friends decided I needed to check out Murray's. My friend's roommate, the local KC expert, told me that I had to get the chocolate flake fromage. "The chocolate lake Vermont?" I said, confused. No no no, FROMAGE, like cheese. The only flavor that stays constant in Murray's ever-shifting landscape of flavors, I felt cheese was a weird addition to ice cream, but then felt slightly hypocritical considering I'd swooned over a maple bacon variety back home in Houston. I swiftly learned that the "fromage" was actually cream cheese. Intrigued, I braved the line and ended up with a single dipped waffle cone and delivered it into my waiting palate. My tastebuds said "WHAAAATTT" as soon as I gave them a spoonful of this delightful iced cream. It's a totally intriguing flavor--the chocolate shavings are closer to milk chocolate and therefore sweet, but the tangy cream cheese lends a much-needed counterpoint. The texture is smooth and rich and has a little bit of slickness just like real cream cheese, but it definitely doesn't taste like that's all that's in the scoop. Make no bones about it--this is ice cream, and it is gooood! The waffle cone, which is made daily in-house, was equally great; not nearly as dry and brittle as storebought varieties, it was the perfect vessel for this frozen treat that was out-of-this-world good. There are toppings to be had, but this variety needs no accompaniment while it's singing inside my mouth. My friends and I sat outside on one of the two painted benches outside Murray's and enjoyed our ice cream, a nice complement to these waning days of summer. The people watching on a Saturday night in Westport is pretty priceless too. We saw a variety of folks, from the little kid precariously licking his cone to the tipsy people attending their 40th high school reunion nearby. As a final note, it's CA$H (and local check) only, so roll with your homies Messrs. Lincoln and Washington instead of whipping out the plastic.

It's the best!!! The French Silk is perfect......salty and sweet! What more is there to say than "MELTED SNICKERS" for a topping!!! You know the product is good when the owner can shut down for a couple months of the year and travel. What a smart business concept. (dont' worry, it's during the winter months when one might not be craving ice cream as badly as normal). No CC excepted so bring cash or your check book! (Does anyone know where the check book is anymore?)

  • Reed N.

Chocolate Flake Fromage? Uh... yeah!!! Delicious... smooth and strong in flavor. Coconut Cream? Uh huh!!! I added butter toasted almonds. That was the deal. What else to do on a 91F at 9pm night than eat some ice cream? Wait... don't answer that! The only drawback is the price.... 2 one-scoop cups and one topping. $7.58. That is almost highway robbery. I better be good... and it is.

Chocolate Chip Formage. Try it. I promise it will be the most amazing thing you've ever put in your mouth. (and if it's not, then either a) you don't like ice cream or b) that 100% pain hot sauce has permanently damaged your taste buds). Murray's has the best ice cream, probably in the entire world. If you haven't tried it, you must stop reading this review immediately, head to Westport and show Murray's some love.

I found myself in this cute little shop twice in as many weeks. And it's not even like it was a Monday and then almost two whole weeks go by and I returned on a Friday. We're talking less than 4 days between my first and second visit. Yeah. I might have a problem. Hi. My name is Michelle and I'm an Ice Creamaholic. I lovelovelove the creamy goodness they offer up. Creative flavors, quality ingredients, a metric ton of variety. And it's all homemade. That my friends is what summer is made of. Go forth and chow. I'll save you a seat at the next meeting.

Ok, as an ice creamaholic who just moved here from the ice cream consumption capital of the US, I must say, I've been sorely disappointed as to what KC has to offer. But in steps Murray's. Ice cream at Murray's is ice cream made with love. It's so creamy and rich. I also love the innovative flavor combinations. I didn't think it was possible to invent flavors I haven't heard of at this point (remember, ice cream consumption capital girl here) but they did. And they put alcohol in! Customer service is also really great. I'm Mrs. Indecisive. I love options but have a hard time choosing one. The guy who served us was friendly and gracious and put up with all my questions and me trying a few flavors. After choosing one, I walked out a happy camper and a fan.

I love Murray's. I spent many a night after rugby practice restoring the calories I lost during drills and tackles. Murray's is just about as cute as it gets. Super malt-shop-y on the inside with tons of choices, coffe, ice creams, home made cookies, smooshies, interesting flavors of cones, sundaes, malts, shakes...there is something for everyone regardless what mood you are in. The ice creams is smooth, soft and cold. They have such interesting flavors that can be made more interesting with toppings, smashed between two home made cookies or mixed as a malt. Murray's has often been the ending to a night at Sung Son or Korma Sutra. Love it.

Murray's is what an ice cream shop should be. It has character, charm and ice cream you will never forget. After having lunch at Californio's with a friend that was visiting we decided we needed dessert. After sampling several kinds we each waited anxiously as they scooped. I had the chocolate chip sweet cream which was everything and more than I thought it would be. Rich, creamy, ice cold (ha) with no freezer burn. Just what we needed on a hot summer day. After ringing it up we were told that they only take cash. Our good friend covered it because there was no way I was letting go of my cone. Amen.

So I work down the street from here and never even know this little gem existed until my co-workers and I were wondering the hood after work one day. A cute little sign at the end of a random little strip mall at the edge of Westport caught my attention: ice cream! For being located in a strip-mall of sorts, the diner-like interior kind of surprised me. Two LARGE cases of ice cream in the big ole' cardboard bucket things greeted me happily behind a HUGE menu of all they offer -- tons of ice cream, soft serve, low-fat, sundaes, hot foods, cookies, sweets, teas, hot and cold drinks, etc! My Muslim co-worker who is on a very particular diet even found something to suit her fancy. After trying several flavors (all very exciting though not as exotic as Glace, which is fine by me) I started off with pumpkin ice cream in a waffle bowl - and though it was nearly $5, it was worth every penny. Lots of seating inside and WiFi, too, which means that you can take a book with you and snuggle up with it for hours, or share some laughs with a larger group at a table for 6, too. One day between meetings, I was in desperate need of ice cream (you know, one of THOSE days). I bolted down the street to see if Murray's could save me from Sugarless Land. Ordered a small carrot-cake ice cream ($3ish). Holy goodness did that stuff hit the spot - thick, sweet ice cream with real bits of carrots and carrot-cake pieces. Wish I ordered a bigger one, because I was nearly done with it before I made it back to my office. Because this place is so hot, they cool down for the winter and take a hiatus between December and... Spring (?). But that means that they sell pints of their ice cream at a huge discount before closing up shop the first weekend of Decembuuur. If only I had one of those industrial sized freezers in my basement...

I am the self-proclaimed expert when it comes to Ice-cream, custards, cakes, desserts, etc. I am da-man. So after a few visits to Murrays and some discussion with third parties, here is my review. Service 3.5 Kids......what else do you expect. They don't care about the customers and it shows. They did get the order correct. Quality/Taste 4.8 Ice-creams are above average and very flavorful. Like the topping opportunities; Loved the melted Snickers on my "munchies" flavor ice-cream Price 2.7 This place is the most expensive dessert establishment I have found in the KC area. I spent over 7 bucks on one Sundae. Like so much about Murrays, but for my money I have other go-to places see my list!!!

BEST ice cream in Kansas City, hands down! And at $6 a cone, it'd better be, haha. You really do get a looooot of product for your money, though; I was passing some off on friends 'cause I had way too much for just one person. I had some kind of awesome ginger cookie concoction, with honey. So yummy. Arguably the best ice cream I've ever had. Can't wait to go back.

Ok so I stopped in Murray's last night and was wowed again.. My little brother got a vanilla ice cream cone with smashed gummie bears on top! How amazing does that sound? I had a kahlua and chocolate chip scoop topped with hot fudge! Did I mention they make their own ice cream? If you haven't been it is a must and you can enjoy your ice cream on one of the many benches outside.

I need to give myself some legitimacy before I give this Westport institution a non-perfect review so... I worked in local ice parlor for three years. Does that count? Anyhow, Murray's ice cream IS good. Chocolate flake fromage (cream cheese based ice cream with chocolate flakes) is a crowd pleaser. The "guidian" flavor (hazelnut and chocolate) is also good. My favorite though is the pistachio. It's light and delicious on a summer night. The cookies are good too. The butterscotch ones are particularly good. The staff is okay-friendly, but not super-friendly. Lots of high school kids behind the counter, I think. Ya know the deal. Okay, so I'm a huge proponent of keeping things local and what not, but there has to be a way for Murray's to keep their costs down. I feel like I'm going broke every time I go there. I got one tiny cookie and one scoop of ice cream (no extras!) and it was over five dollars. And come on, guys, why haven't you started taking credit card yet? I wrote the most pathetic check ever last night to Murray's. In the memo I wrote "expensive ice ream". Plus, for the summer, closing at 9:30 PM feels really early to me. The ambiance is decent. Very "ice-cream store-y" here. No surprises. The end.

Go to the ATM, then go to Murray's. Get at least $20 because if you're like me you'll want the Cookie Monster with dark chocolate hot fudge and chances are whoever you're with won't realize that debit cards aren't cash. This is the other best ice cream place in KC (as opposed to Glace yelp.com/biz/glace-artis… ) but can be just as pricey. The flavors are interesting, though more traditional dessert flavors and the baked goods and variety of toppings make it an indulgence not to be missed. They close a little early (and for the winter) but don't wait until too late because they may be out of what you want.

*REMEMBER: CASH ONLY (no credit/debit cards)* This place really is the best local cream shop-- After sampling several delicious flavors, I stuck with the Chocolate Flake Fromage. It's an awesome flavor. I also enjoyed the quirky Grape Nuts flavor. It was very tasty! My friend who brought me here is in lust with the truffleupagus flavor. The flavors rotate, so you can't always count on your favorite being there. Then again, it's a great way to find a new favorite every time! DEFINITELY GO HERE!

I insisted on returning after our initial visit, 4 years ago. and was rewarded. with silky, smooth, creamy, ice cream. where else can I get 'grasshopper' flavor, done perfectly?

Great Tasting Ice Cream, and friendly service in a quaint westport shop setting. I want to go back and try the ice cream sandwiches, they look amazing. The Mint Chocolate chip was one of the best tasting mint chocolate chips i have ever had, I can still taste it from last night. The one thing i found kind of odd at this place is why do they weigh the ice cream, it makes no sense. If you ordered one scoop and it

I just wished they were open throughout the whole year. good selection of flavors, chocolate selection rocks!

You can't get in a rut going here since they change the flavor offerings constantly. This can also pose a problem if you have a favorite that only makes occassional appearances. Beware: they only take cash and check.

I love it here. It's cute, friendly and hand-made! I like to get a cup of ice cream and just take a walk around the neighborhood. So far, I haven't tried a flavor I didn't like. Can't really comment on the cookies yet cuz I always go for ice cream. Maybe sometime this week, I'll stop by for some cookies on my way home. Who am I kidding, I'll prolly get both and get sick from too much sweets. =) p.s. 1st ever yelp sticker sighting in KC

This place opened and we never looked back. The flavors are amazing and you can get on a call list so they contact you when they make your favorite flavor! Even the people working here are happy. If you are even close to the Westport area, stop in and take a pint home. Also, I ordered an ice cream birthday cake and it was so amazing!!!

Easily the best ice cream in Kansas City, and given my addiction, I would even vote for 'Best in Missouri'. Let's just say there is a reason that this small business has been around for 25+ years. I really enjoy they creamy, ice-chunk free texture of the ice cream at Murray's. The 14% milk fat included in the mix (I had to ask...) really is responsible for that glorious texture. Flavors I would HIGHLY recommend trying: Smitty's French Lemon, One Drunk Monk, Sublime Lemon Lime, Honey Ginger, Fred and Ginger and of course the classic Chocolate Flake Fromage.

If I could live on an ice cream only diet, I would be the happiest person walking this earth. If I could eat only ice cream, the ice cream I would choose would be that of Murray's. Every time that I think that I have a favorite, I find a new one that I love just as much. The flavors and creaminess is unmatched. They are closing soon for the winter months so buy a deep freeze, run to Murray's and stock up. Spring cannot come quickly enough.

OMG so good. They have Chocolate Truffel Sorbet. No Milk for those of us that are lactose intolerant or milk allergry. I will be back many times. I want to take a gallon home, but I didn't have a cooler with me.This is my new favorite place.

Murray's ice cream is the BEST ice cream in the metro area. I agree with another poster's comment of "made with love." There is something special about it... I LOVE their oreo cookie with cream ice cream... AMAZING. I still dream about it... yum! The only thing I could think of that could be negative is that it is closed in the winter- but I think it only makes spring that much more exciting!

No one is more surprised that me that I am writing up Murray's for any less than 5 stars. Heck the only reason I have not posted a review before was that there was not an option to give them 6 out of 5 starts. Which until this year was the only ratting I thought they deserved. I originally assumed that I just showed up on a bad day, and that it was a fluke... but I have been back three times this year and that the same results each time. Like any good whipped little fan boy I was there opening day. Which this year landed on St. Patties day parade. Which meant 45min in traffic, to park at least half a mile away, and fight angst the crowds just to get into Westport. To say nothing of actually getting to Murray's door. Still small price to pay for treats that left me moaning obscenely, with an endorphin high that caused me to wonder if sex was really all that important. My disappointment at what I found was stark. The chocolate chip cookies that used to be so rich and heavy that Murray's actually charges for them by the oz were on the dry side and bitter. Those of you that have tried your hand at baking and failed to mix in the baking soda well enough will know the bitter flavor I am talking about. The chocolate milkshake was thin for the first time ever and tasted like it was made with the cheap ice cream from the grocery store. (Sniffle) (Sniffle) Oh Murray's my love. What has become of you? Why have you forsaken me.

Okay the ice cream was pretty good but it was nothing compared to the peanut butter pocket cookie with chocolate chips. I love peanut butter so I had to try it and I was extremley pleased with the soft cookie and delish peanut butter filling in the center. If you are a peanut butter fan you have to get one!!

I had Frigette Bordeaux (choc. chunk ice cream with wine-soaked cherries) in an espresso-dipped waffle cone. It was very good. They were busy, and there are more than your fair share of hipsters at this place. Service was about as quick as could be expected. I plan to go back and try more of their offerings. I should also note that an ice cream place (or anywhere for that matter) has to really blow my mind in order to get a 5.

Delicious; didn't ask, but they have to use all fresh, natural ingredients. Go, go, go

Really good local ice cream parlor....inventive ice cream flavors, must see and taste....only negative it's cash only!!!

  • Chris N.

Pros- Good location, good ice cream, friendly staff. Cons- Small servings, astronomical prices, not a good a value. I don't mind paying 3 or 4 dollars for an ice cream cone, but I do mind paying that for the smallest ice cream scoop in the world. Unfortunately, the poor value offered here will keep me from returning.

Yum, yum, yum, yum! Oh my weakness for ice cream met its match. Loved the charm of this old fashioned ice cream parlor, with classic treats like limeade (!), hot fudge sundaes, hand made malts (no blenders people!), homemade cookies, and of course, the ice cream. It seriously tastes like its made with love... Its sad that they're closed in the winter (especially because I'm due in March, missing the most crucial months of my pregnancy). But that only means I'm going to have to buy my own malt, and stockpile pints in my freezer. There are options I suppose. The staff is very awesome--so friendly and willing to help. They seem so happy, but they do work with awesome ice cream, so it makes sense right? I went on a rainy day, so it wasn't so busy. But I can imagine the lines during the summer would be pretty outrageous. Have fun sampling!

The one and only thing I miss about K.C. (sorry Gates BBQ) is the Chocolate Flake Fromage ice cream served to me by one of the arty fellows from behind this counter.... I wish they could air-lift crates of the stuff to my home here... ice cream is just not the same... Murray's is not, NOT enough to make me want to stay in K.C. but you better believe when we are forced to visit (d@mn holidays), I still have Murray's plugged into my cell phone to check on the visiting hours for my one true ice cream love...

I have been a faithful patron for the last 10 yrs to Murrays, however my last two experiences have brought me to the point of writing this review.. I have since moved away from Kansas City and come down twice a year my two stops are always Gates BBQ and Murrays for the SnickerDoodle Cookies. I have arrived at the posted open time and found the cookies not available/ready and been treated poorly when I ask when they will be done. I have tried to place orders in advance for a favorite ice cream (as indicated to do so by Murray herself) and been told by one person they dont take orders, then another told me that they do and it would be ready... then when i arrive there is no such order and when I see murray in the background working ask to speak to her and was "passed off" to another employee to handle her bad customer service skills. This will be my last visit to murrays sadly. I love to support local stores but i will not support a store that with such a *our shi* dont stink* attitude. DONE.

  • Kate V.

It's cool to have a handmade ice cream shop, and I forgive them the pay-by-weight policy, but I feel like they should branch out into more interesting flavors. The cookies are quite good but usually sold out by the afternoon. Lots of topping options, and you can get hand-dipped (espresso!) waffle cones, which, yum.

  • James C.

This place is pretty metal. Went there once and it was pretty packed, but the employees were patient and understanding. They have all sorts of weird flavors like Chocolate Fromage and Carrot Cake, not to mention limeades and lemonades, malts, cookies, and probably handguns and enchanted amulets, too. The point is they got a lot of stuff, and a lot of it is good. I won't begrudge them for closing in the winter. Who eats ice cream in the winter? Maybe in my native Atlanta, but not here. Why don't we all go outside in the currently insane hot mugginess and enjoy a steaming bowl of chili? Plus, with the KCAI help (at least they look it), the great location and assorted quirkiness (they don't take plastic), this really is the kind of small business that you can feel good supporting. Murray's, you make me feel, you make me feel, you make me feel like a natural man.

Very disapointed with Murray and how she avoided me while in the store and then called upon exiting. I explained to her polite, caught in the middle employee, that I am out of town and very much enjoy the carrot cake ice cream. I was told the year prior that I can request in advance so I did... This year I left my info over a month prior to my visit, and then followed up two weeks prior and was shocked to learn that they dont do request and when they decide to make it, that is when I can request a pint! Last year I saw a pint in the freezer and Murray stated that it was being held for someone and if in three days they don't return then I can purchase. Well I left for LA on the third day, and I even stopped in before close to see if they could sell it and I was denied. Then the next morning it had someone else's name on it and that was just odd. I hate that I am this disappointed over ice cream. Bottom line if you tell a customer something, follow through, if not at least take two minutes to correct the mistake in person. Don't call after customer leaves, that only made the situation even more irritating. I suggest Sheridan's for anyone wanting consistency.

I could eat ice cream walking bare foot through a snowstorm, and Murray's is one of my KC favorites (its neck and neck with Glace depending on what it is you are looking for!) The wait staff has great character, and even when it is busy and the line is out the door, everyone seems to be in a great mood. The fact that it has the slight feel of an old school soda jerk and ice cream parlor is amazing as well. The fact that they don't take plastic is kind of a bummer, but I understand why (working at a small business and having people use Discover to buy their $1.50 soda is like paying them to take it from you) so make sure to have your checkbook or cash handy! Back to the matter at hand, the staff will let you try a spoonful of every flavor if you're nice, and yes I have done it. The ever changing menu is also an awesome reason to come and come again! I highly recommend the root beer float flavor in an actual root beer float! Or the cake and ice cream flavored ice cream in a brownie sundae, with a fresh frosted brownie, its like fudge covered heaven in a dish! Oh yea, and did I mention fresh made waffle cones and brownie cones dipped in chocolate? Well, now that I am salivating, I am calling it quits and taking a walk down to Westport, you'll find me at Murrays...

I love Murrays. So whenever I'm in the area I try to stop by for dessert. I prefer this ice cream versus yogurt or a cold stone type of ice cream or gelato. Home made ice cream ice cream.. people know what they're selling.. and for an ice cream store... the workers are thin. Hahaha... just noticed that the last time out here. I'd be a heffer if i worked here. My favorite is their coffee ice cream shakes, it's a shot of espresso blended into any flavor of their ice creams. I usually choose a nutty coffee flavor. The coffee bar part still uses the hand made espresso machine. I don't see that often anymore. First time I had it, I was so wired from the coffee and from the thrill of a good shake... then at the end I get really sad when it's all over.

What a fun little place. Murray's is that classic 50's neighborhoood ice cream / soda / coffee place. The ice cream was fantastic, and you should really check this place out. The people in there were nice too.

ok folks. this is the BEST icecream, cookie, and soda fountain shoppe in the midwest. gay friendly. it's also a coffee bar, but the coffee isn't all that great. the home-made cookies are AMAZING. made fresh with lots of love put into them. many flavors of icecream and soda pop to choose from. great location. the only downside is they're only open during certain seasons. located in the heart of westport

Murray's is as good as it gets. Really good ice cream with flavors that rotate very frequently. It's in a nice spot in Westport with good views of Californio's beautiful multi-level patio. I know ice cream and, in my opinion, Murray's is definitely the best in town.

Best Ice Cream in KC! I love the idea of of making your own ice cream cookie sandwich! The girls are so nice and they let you taste as much as you want. Cash or check only and it's open seasonally BUT it's definitely worth it. I love it! Enjoy!

This place is pretty special--lots of interesting homemade ice cream flavors that change almost daily. There is something for everyone here. The staff is uniformly great. Be sure to ask for samples, they are happy to give you a taste of anything before you buy. Also, if you really like a particular variety, Murray's will call you and tell you when it is available.

Just outstanding ice cream, with unusual flavors. I love their chocolate flake fromage, and the cherry (which I don't usually like). But call ahead if you're not sure of their hours. They close over the winter months, and on Monday & Tuesday this summer.

This place is yummy and the only place I can think of where customers are encouraged to keep sampling flavors until they find their perfect match. Just make sure to bring cash because they don't accept credit cards.

I still remember picking out two different homemade cookies and selecting the yummy ice cream to make a delectable cookie sandwich. Wasn't open all year, so it was definitely a place I looked forward to going.

Fan-friggin-tastic. The employees are friendly and patient...and encourage you to sample as many flavors as you'd like. But most importantly, the ice cream is the best in KC.
